Position Overview

The Pensacola Humane Society is seeking a Florida-licensed veterinarian for full-time work at our Spay and Neuter Clinic. Candidates should have a passion for our mission of providing low-cost spay/neuter services to the public and rescue pets to reduce the number of pets euthanized in area shelters. Vet will be supported by a team of vet technicians and vet assistants. Additional training, CE credits, and relocation reimbursement may be available to the right candidate. Position reports to the Executive Director and the Medical Director and works collaboratively with the PHS Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers to meet the high standards set for by Humane Alliance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform surgical sterilizations on 25-35 animals per day
  • Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery
  • Examine animals post-op as necessary to determine healing
  • Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow-up care
  • Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients
  • Must be comfortable working with dogs, cats, and feral cats in traps
  • Effectively team lead, displaying positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members
  • Provide training, oversight, mentoring, and consultation for technical and support staff
  • Maintain pharmacy/inventory (including controlled substances, regular orders, and inventory); maintain and reconcile controlled drug log in accordance with DEA guidelines
  • Ensure accuracy as it relates to drug logs, submit reports within due dates
  • Other duties assigned by the Executive Director

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree DVM
  • Florida state license to practice veterinary medicine
  • DEA Certification and CSR, or ability to obtain
  • Experience in high volume spay/neuter clinic and/or post-graduate surgical training preferred
  • Two or more years’ experience practicing veterinary medicine in a veterinary clinic, hospital, and/or animal shelter or control facility
  • Must be able to sit or stand for 8 or more hours a day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
  • Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations
  • Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm
  • Demonstrate success in working with a diverse team
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with a diverse range of audiences and settings
  • Ability to handle stressful and/or difficult situations as presented by clients, visitors, staff, and/or volunteers
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
  • Must complete a background investigation prior to hire

Working Conditions

Work environment may have regular exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as zoonotic disease, parasites, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, pathogenic substances, animal attacks, or animal bites. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.

Hours are typically Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am - 5:30 pm.

Terms of Employment

The Spay-Neuter Surgeon will be expected to work approximately ten (10) hours per day, with every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. This position is considered to be an At-Will-Employment. The salary for this position is established by the Executive Director and the Medical Director. The benefits for this position are set out in the staff handbook, and from time to time are amended.

Evaluation

Performance of this job is evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Trustees’ policy on Evaluation. The Executive Director and Medical Director will conduct the evaluation of this position.
